Teen Titans Go! is an American animated television series based on the DC Comics fictional superhero team. It premiered on April 23, 2013 and continues to this day.

Plot

This follow-up to the popular Teen Titans series takes a more comedic look at the superheroes, showing what life is like for the teens when their capes come off. Funny things happen to Robin, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy and Cyborg between saving the world and being regular teens, living together without adult supervision. The teens, in their ordinary lives, deal with the everyday issues of adolescence that include such important things as having staring contests to determine who does the laundry and going on a series of quests to construct the perfect sandwich. But, of course, the heroes still fight crime in Jump City when the need arises. Whatever the situation, they're always ready for an adventure - inside the house or out of it.

Why It Sucks

  1. The main problem with Teen Titans Go! is that it deviates heavily from the original series; whereas the original heavily relied on action, storytelling, emotion and character development, Teen Titans Go! pushes that aside to put its focus onto comedy, randomness and slice-of-life.
  2. The Flash animation appears very choppy and seems inferior to the traditional animation in the original series, and the fact that the latter aired ten years prior doesn't exactly help; on the topic of visuals, the color scheme is extremely bright in some ways and a handful of the facial expressions throughout the show kind of look... off-putting.
  3. The series' attempts at comedy and humor often fall flat and come across as either offensive, contrived, low-brow or disgusting; on that topic, the show frequently relies on toilet humor and gross-out, to the point where one episode, "Hot Garbage", heavily relies on gross-out, and flatulence is the main focus in "Butt Atoms".
    • In some of the earlier episodes, Starfire can be seen "bathing" Silkie... by licking him in the way a mother cat does with her kittens, as well as eating food and spitting it into his mouth in the way a mother bird does with her chicks.
    • The gag of Cyborg's neck extending in length can get very tiresome at times.
  4. Many episode titles are either misleading or nonsensical, usually being named after a brief line of dialogue or a small, insignificant detail within the episode itself; for example:
    • One episode is titled "Croissant", which barely focuses on or even references croissants, aside from one line from Cyborg, and instead focuses on the Titans finding a cocoon they assume to be Beast Boy.
    • "Hey You, Don't Forget About Me in Your Memory" isn't an actual line, but rather a parody of "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds, which plays during the opening and closing credits of The Breakfast Club, as the episode in question parodies the film.
    • "The Return of Slade" implies Slade would be some sort of major focus in some way in the episode, but is barely at the beginning.
    • "Batman v Teen Titans: Dark Injustice", being an episode themed around April Fools' Day, isn't about the Titans fighting Batman, but rather about the Titans pulling pranks on each other; in fact, Batman doesn't even appear in the actual episode whatsoever!
    • "Dog Hand" isn't the main subject, and that honor goes to Trigon coming to visit Raven; meanwhile, the dog hand is Cyborg's hand transformed by Trigon. The fact that it was originally titled "Raven's Daddy Dearest" and was renamed to "Dog Hand" for some unexplained reason doesn't exactly help.
    • Similarly, "Nose Mouth" is a play on Cyborg's physical alteration, which also isn't the main focus.
  5. Many of the antagonists aren't much of a threat, with Trigon, who was portrayed as an embodiment of evil in the comics and in the original series, being portrayed as a stereotypical, dimwitted sitcom father, and the Fearsome Five also being portrayed as dimwitted punching bags.
  6. The showrunners cannot seem to handle any form criticism, to the point where specific episodes seem to be purposely designed to jab at any critics towards the show.
  7. Several scenes that can be considered inappropriate for a children's cartoon:
    • At one point in "Real Magic", Beast Boy is laying on Raven's bed wearing only underwear, gesturing her to come closer.
    • Several episodes feature scenes of characters twerking, more specifically "The Curse of the Booty Scooty", "Booty Scooty", "Boys vs. Girls" and "The Fourth Wall".
      • The show also attempts to sugarcoat it by referring to twerking as the "Booty Scooty".
      • One episode, "Butt Atoms", features a panty shot.
      • In "Legs", the Titans worship Raven's legs after her transformation into "Lady Legasus".
      • In "Pure Protein", Robin deliberately strips naked in front of the rest of the Titans as a self-demonstration of nudity.
      • "Bucket List" features child abuse... in a show aimed towards children; the episode in question shows the Titans fighting over, throwing and pulling around an actual baby like a ragdoll, with Starfire eventually throwing said baby onto a bus and being praised for her actions.
  8. Mediocre designs for the characters, more specifically for the Titans themselves, who are supposed to be teenagers but look more like fifth graders.
    • Speaking of the Titans themselves, their characterizations have been butchered and barely feel anything like themselves from the original series, despite Teen Titans Go! being supposed to be based on the original:
      • Robin acts as a dominant and severely paranoid, arrogant jerk, especially towards Starfire, rather than being a strict team leader. Not helping matters is that he is also treated as a Butt-Monkey at times, as his subordinates often act disrespectful to him, even whenever he is in the right.
      • Starfire acts more immature and childish, and screams a lot in a way as if Hynden Walch is screaming at the top of her lungs. She also adds "the" into many of her lines of dialogue and it tends to become rather annoying.
        • In "Breakfast Cheese" she urges the Titans to make peace with the H.I.V.E. Five... despite having fought them herself with the other Titans in prior episodes; even after this episode, she reverts back to fighting the H.I.V.E. Five anyways, making the whole thing pointless.
      • Beast Boy, who's been portrayed as childish but also serious in the original, is now not only an immature and whiny party animal but also a lazy couch potato who barely gets up to do something simple.
      • Cyborg is also portrayed as an annoying, idiotic slacker.
      • Raven, despite being kinda likable, is flanderized as well, going from gothic and short-tempered, yet caring to emo, depressed and disastrous.
  9. Even pushing the flanderizations and botched characterizations aside, the Titans are supposed to be portrayed as heroes but end up behaving more like villains anyways:
    • In "The HIVE Five", the Titans continuously torment the H.I.V.E. Five, even though the latter just wanted a day off and no one in said group was doing anything wrong in said episode.
      • In "Finally a Lesson", the Titans deliberately and harshly kick the villains out from their apartment homes.
      • In "Caged Tiger", Dr. Light considers redeeming himself and joining the Titans, but Robin, Cyborg and Beast Boy refuse to accept this and instead beat him up mercilessly.
      • In "Snuggle Time", in order to get more free time with their cats and drink hot cocoa, the Titans straight-up turn into villains, build an evil lair and remorselessly murder Batman, Batgirl, the Titans East, Aqualad and Aquaman.
      • The Titans are constantly gunning for Robin's position as leader to near-Starscream levels.
      • The Titans cause more collateral damage to Jump City than any of the villains, treating it as though it is their playground and acting disrespectful towards others, intentionally creating enemies through ridiculous insults and inflicting harm on others, including the Mocking Birds, Zan (one of the Wonder Twins) and even Aqualad.
  10. The songs tend to be rather annoying and repetitive, more specifically "Waffles" and "Pee Pee Dance".
  11. It tends to act very disrespectful towards and insult other franchises (i.e. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), real people (i.e. George Washington and Queen Elizabeth II of England) and even holidays; for example, Santa Claus is portrayed as some dictator intending to replace every day of the year with Christmas.
  12. The show shares the same issue with other cartoons of lacking a coherent continuity, resulting in continuity errors such as Beast Boy being portrayed as vegetarian despite being shown eating meat-based products (let alone meat by itself) in prior episodes; this can be justified, as Michael Jelenic confessed that he is stressed about the idea of doing interconnected episodes as he previously worked on Young Justice and admitted it was difficult to keep up with the whole story.
  13. Some episodes tend to have filler, such as a brief montage of Robin making waffles himself in "Waffles".
  14. Intense soundtracks are pretty much recycled from Internet videos, although this only applying to the first season.
  15. The show is full of toxic morals and life lessons; it is understandable that these are supposed to be jokes or use of irony or sarcasm, but there is a chance that some, including children, might misunderstand:
    • Both "Pyramid Scheme" and "The Dignity of Teeth" encourage greed.
    • "Staring at the Future" states that responsibility is bad and that if your friends are responsible members of society, their lives are horrible and it is recommended to screw them over.
    • "Artful Dodgers" encourages cheating.
    • "Mas y Menos" encourages glory-hounding and showboating.
    • "The True Meaning of Christmas" boils down to Christmas being entirely about presents and nothing else; the Titans even destroy Santa's workshop when he preaches the true meaning of Christmas.
    • "Books" boils down to books being bad for you.
    • "Knowledge" boils down to intelligence being bad and making you an insufferable, judgmental and overly-critical person whom no one wants to befriend.
    • "Boys vs Girls" encourages sexism and states that gender equality doesn't exist.
    • "Hot Garbage" encourages hoarding, a serious psychological problem.
    • "Nean" teaches that being mean sometimes is okay.
    • "Think About Your Future" teaches that making bad life decisions and living your lives to the shortest is recommended.
    • "I Am Chair" teaches that sitting on massage chairs is bad because they brainwash people and reduce them down to living vegetables to the point of starvation and dehydration and that they are robots who want to take over the world and end humanity.
    • "Hot Salad Water" basically preaches blind nationalism by portraying the United States of America as the greatest nation ever and dumbing down Britain, alongside other nations.
    • "Look Who's Laughing Now?" teaches that college is pointless and that people should just live their lives. Which is a bad lesson to teach because, although college is not for everyone, it leads to a high paying job that can support people for life.
  16. Episode premises tend to be rather ridiculous for the genre Teen Titans Go! is supposed to belong to — the superhero genre. For example, in "Head Fruit", a tree literally grows out of Beast Boy's head.
  17. It's so sad knowing the fact that the people who worked on the original Teen Titans series actually found enjoyment in this show, and didn't care if it insulted the original series.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The art style, from backgrounds to character designs, while mediocre compared to in the original, are nice to look at.
  2. The Titans admitted that the original Teen Titans is better than themselves, as mentioned in the episode "The Fourth Wall."
    • The same can be said in "The Cape," where they watch an episode of the original Teen Titans, and actually enjoy it.
  3. The Flash animation is okay in some aspects.
    • Some episodes even manage to give out more skillful and impressive animation in certain scenes.
  4. While a lot of episodes have bad lessons and morals, some of them (ironically) manage to give out good ones every now and then. These include, but are not limited to:
    • "Pyramid Scheme," although it encourages greed, but it states that pyramid schemes are bad.
    • "Spice Game" states that you should live life in the middle; not too bland, but not too dangerous.
    • "Vegetables" encourages staying on a balanced diet.
    • In "Permanent Record," Beast Boy and Cyborg's lessons are about the colors of the sky and romantic chemistry.
    • "Burger vs. Burrito," teaches people that it's ok to have different opinions. In fact, Cyborg and Beast Boy taste each others food at the end of the episode and they both enjoy it.
    • "Smile Bones" says you shouldn't wolf down your food, but eat it normally.
  5. Every now and then (to be fair), there are some good, decent or funny episodes, such as the first six episodes of the series ("Legendary Sandwich", "Pie Bros", "Drivers Ed", "Dog Hand", "Double Trouble", and “The Date"), "Colors of Raven", “40%, 40%, 20%" (the critically-acclaimed episode), the four-part miniseries "The Night Begins to Shine" or "The Day the Night Stopped Beginning to Shine and Became Dark Even Though it Was the Day", “Video Game References", "Ghost with the Most" (as well as the episode which is a crossover with Beetlejuice), "Cartoon Feud" (a crossover with Scooby-Doo in which the Titans and Mystery, Inc. play Family Feud), "Huggbees" (which is a crossover with Freakazoid!), "Superhero Feud" and "Space House" (as the two DC Super Hero Girls crossover episodes).
    • The episode “Villains in a Van Getting Gelato” is a very enjoyable episode and actually has good writing unlike most of the other episodes in the series. The episode also has a different feel to it and doesn’t feel like it’s part of the series and just a separate project, it also feels more like a kid-friendly version of a classic Family Guy episode then a typical Teen Titans Go! episode.
  6. The movie is considered an improvement and wasn't that bad, despite some of the negative criticism.
    • The sequel Teen Titans Go! vs. Teen Titans, however, was a major downgrade, ripping off elements from Turtles Forever and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and portraying the original Teen Titans a if they were bossy older siblings.
    • The third movie is nothing but just a commentary on Space Jam.
  7. The voice acting (for the most part) is at least decent, compared to the original, despite all the wasted talent. This is because most of the voice cast from the original still retain their respective roles. For example, Hynden Walch still reprises her role as Starfire, while Tara Strong still voices Raven.
  8. It contains lesser-known corners of the DC canon.
  9. Although butchered like the rest of the Titans, Starfire still remains as the nicest member of the Titans for the most part, and Raven is at least the most tolerable.
  10. Fall Out Boy appeared in this and they are actually based on the real-life members. They also have a pretty decent role in one episode.
  11. There are at least some good amounts of funny moments here and there, as long as it doesn't shoehorn poor humour, toilet jokes and twerking.
  12. There are catchy and good songs like the credit music and "The Night Begins to Shine" (not to be confused with the miniseries of the same name). Puffy AmiYumi (the J-pop duo who sang the theme song for original Teen Titans) even did a cover of "The Night Begins to Shine".
    • To add to this, the remixed theme song can be catchy despite being short. It was also remixed by Mix Master Mike.
    • Depending on what you think, some songs that are annoying might also be catchy.
  13. The action scenes can be entertaining.
  14. Some of the villains, like Control Freak, could still retain their charm from its original incarnation.
  15. Thankfully, it doesn't take over the Cartoon Network schedule nowadays.

Reception

Teen Titans Go! has been met with a mostly mixed-to-negative reception.

It has been heavily panned by Internet reviewers and fans of the original show and is often considered to be one of the worst Cartoon Network shows of all time. It has below average ratings on TV.com (3.9/10) and IMDb (5.3/10). WatchMojo has criticized the use of irony in the show, fearing that kids might not understand it. It was ranked #1 on their "Top 10 Worst Animated Superhero Shows" and #4 on their "Top 10 Worst Cartoon Network Shows." WatchMojo has also created lists for the show's worst episodes, why the show is hated, and bad lessons it teaches kids.

However, some media reviewers have had a reaction to the contrary, believing that this was a well done reinvention of the original show. Kids have taken the show very well, as it performed positively far beyond expectations. The series has garnered record ratings among kids, with it currently being the one of the most popular shows on Cartoon Network.

Trivia

  • Around 2015-18, it dominated the network as episodes aired non-stop and took up a lot of the schedule, just because it was pulling in better ratings than other shows. However, the series' ratings began dipping significantly due to the target audience becoming fed up with the lack of diversity in the schedule; Not helping was the fact that Nickelodeon and Disney were beating Cartoon Network in ratings (Nick due to The Loud House and improvements to SpongeBob, and Disney due to Star vs. the Forces of Evil and the DuckTales reboot). As of September 2018, the series now only has four hours of airtime on weekdays, five on weekends, in an effort to return diversity to the schedule and reverse the falling viewership trend.
    • However, a day-long marathon still airs once in a while, but not as frequent.
  • The creators of this show claimed that they only seen a couple of Teen Titans, but they do admit it was a pretty good show.
  • Some of the crew members of the 2003 series returned to work on Teen Titans Go!.
  • As of 2021, the show has over 320 episodes and counting.
  • Since Season 5, viewership for the show has declined.
  • A direct-to-video crossover movie with the original Teen Titans was released on September 24, 2019.

Regarding reason 17, does anyone remember the episode where the Titans get tried for being more destructive and harmful than the villains themselves??? That was justified in my book. I support the death penalty but not against minors. I'd assume the reason why they weren't executed as sentenced is either they had to undergo a more humane punishment (eg. prison time), they somehow get acquitted, or escaped.

Sorry, to whoever put this in the Average Shows category, the reason why it can't be average is because that people still rabidly hate the show and there are many people still ripping on it.

But seriously, this makes Johnny Test, Secret Mount Fort Awesome, and Problem Solverz look like She-Ra (2018). Ok, now obviously that's overexaggerating A LOT of things, but, you get my point. I HATE Toddler Titans Go! (yeah, I'm referring to them like Mr. Enter does now, cause frankly, calling it Teen Titans, is an insult to Teen Titans).

This anime changed my life. Before I watched it I was in an immense state of pain and grief both physically and mentally. one day in the winter of 2014 I was bedridden in the hospital and requested that an anime be put on for me to try to enjoy what little amount of life I had left in me at the time. The doctors put on this anime and by the time it was done, suddenly I was in perfect health. The doctors said it's unlike anything they've ever seen and discharged me immediately. the writing and acting and singing in this show is incredible, easily one of the best animes ever. Way better than that trash known as the original Teen Titans. That show can go burn in a fire.

Most of the episode are like clickbait, like if a character says something random that would be the title. and I feel the H.I.V.E are more likable then the titans and that's saying something (I guess)

Before you bash me in the comments, here me out. When I was a kid, I like Teen Titans G0, but after Season 2 I started to watch the original Teen Titans to see if it's almost the same as Teen Titans GO. I was wrong (of course) and I did like Teen Titans as it gave me a anime type vibe with some of its episodes. Going back to Teen Titans GO, I started to look on the internet and see rants about this show saying things like, "This Show is TRASH and should go burn in H**L." And that's when my opinion change about this show and became one of the haters of Teens Titans GO from Season 3 through Season 5 as I also called it a show that only aired bad, boring, or offensive episodes (minus 40% 40% 20% and "The Night Begins To Shine" Special) with unlikeable characters, and cheap animation. But when I watched the movie and realized that it was a good movie, I began watching this show again and became, once again, one of the rare fans who like this show again. Overall this show was a ok show that I wouldn't mind watching if it was on. I'm not saying its perfect because even when I was a fan of this show, there were some episodes that I didn't enjoyed but I don't considered it a overall bad show IMO. Sure it isn't a Powerpuff Girls, a Johnny Bravo, a Ed, Edd, N Eddy etc, but this show is a very solid show.

The TTG is a bad show and a miserable reboot that serves no purpose other than to reassure fans of the original Teen Titans that they are still the "chosen ones" of the Cartoon Network company.
