Hilfe, meine Familie spinnt! ("Help, My Family is Crazy!") is an ill-fated German remake of Married... With Children that aired on RTL in 1993.

Josef “Jupp” Strunk (Al Bundy), a shoemaker, is living with his lazy wife Roswitha (Peggy), their equally dysfunctional children Tim (Bud) and Biggi (Kelly), and their dog Cobold (Buck) in their home at Cologne. Their neighbors are the Pfeiffers (the Rhoades), who are well-behaved and tame, something that doesn’t describe the Strunks.

Why It Sucks

  1. The biggest problem is that the show tried to copy the original frame-for-frame; even the looks and gestures of the actors had to replicate the original, and all the sets were styled after the originals.
  2. Because of this, no attempt was ever made to adjust the show to its new cultural surroundings, and any attempt that was made is mostly cosmetic.
  3. In addition, every joke and situation was rehashed from the original show.
  4. Married... With Children had already been exported to Germany the previous year with great success, so there was no point in making a German remake.
  5. Poor acting that tries too hard to replicate the original performances. Katrin Lippisch is the biggest offender, as she looks too young and girly to pass off as a German Kelly Bundy.
  6. Some translation issues here and there.

Hilfe, mein Familie spinnt! received negative reviews from critics and audiences due to being a carbon copy of the original show. The original show aired daily in the afternoon on RTL while this show aired only on Thursday nights on the same network.
