The idea of a cartoon going on for 30+ years may sound cool on paper, but ends up being a terrible idea...

The Simpsons is an American animated sitcom created by cartoonist Matt Groening. During the first 10 seasons, the show was considered one of the greatest TV shows of all-time. However, ever since Season 11 began, the show has been going downhill to this day and still hasn't recovered from Season 9's "The Principal and the Pauper". The first 10 seasons were given good reviews by critics and audiences, but all seasons afterward have been met with mixed-to-negative reception by critics and fans of the series. It has been bad for so long to the point where the flanderization trope is named after a Simpsons character (in this case, Ned Flanders), as well as the longest decline for any American animated series.

Bad Qualities

The main problem is that the series has been going on for way too long (it started in 1989), as the show now has 32 seasons and over 692 episodes and counting. While it sounds like a good idea on paper, the show will often jump the shark because of this.
- There are enough episodes where Wikipedia needed to have two episode lists.
- Not even all the seasons are released on DVD yet, as only the first 20 seasons have a DVD release and for whatever reason, FOX/Disney opted not to release the rest of the seasons on DVD/Blu-ray.
Some of the characters have gotten flanderized.
- Homer has gone from a dimwitted, yet well-meaning father to a moronic idiot who sometimes acts like a selfish jerk.
- Marge has gone from a strict, yet well-meaning mother to a stereotypical overprotective mother who worries too much about everything and is no fun at all.
- Bart has gone from a mischievous prankster with a heart of gold to a mean-spirited, selfish, callous and malicious sociopath. Thankfully, he still gets his comeuppance for his antics sometimes.
- Lisa has gone from a voice-of-reason-type character to a complete know-it-all Mary Sue.
- Ned Flanders has gone from a religious man who enjoys other things as well to a religious fanatic who will lash out at anyone who doesn't support it. In fact, he's actually the namesake for the flanderization trope.
- Otto Mann has gone from a cool and laid back bus driver to a dangerous low-life and a drug addict.
Similar to modern Family Guy, it tends to overuse pop-culture references, celebrity parodies/cameos, and product placement.
Some episodes rip-off episodes from previous seasons. Other episodes tend to copy and paste some jokes from previous seasons (unless it's done right).
While the animation has noticeably improved, it has gotten more restricted since Season 20b (though Season 32 is a little looser). However, the lighting, textures, coloring and character designs are a step up from previous seasons.
Some episodes are extremely preachy and even stray into pro-SJW territory, especially episodes centering around Lisa.
While there are still a handful of good jokes, there are some stale and repetitive jokes. Some of them are just tasteless (like the 9/11 joke in "Moonshine River"), some are flat-out disturbing (like Marge pressuring Homer into having rough sex with her in "Strong Arms of the Ma" and Homer getting raped by a panda in "Homer vs. Dignity"), and some aren't even really jokes at all (like whenever a meme or something out of pop culture is referenced, it is instead just simply shown without it be satirized or a joke being made about it).
Some episodes are either flat-out underwhelming, mediocre at best or are hard to watch, due to the plot being either very confusing or anti-climactic.
These seasons try too hard to stay relevant, by constantly doing things in a desperate attempt to try and get attention, like killing off Rabbi Krustofski or having Homer and Marge undergo a fake divorce, which is proof that the show is better being what it is than trying to stay relevant.
Several of the recurring characters are pretty annoying and unlikable, especially Helen Lovejoy, the Rich Texan, Gil Gunderson, the "Yeeeeeeeees!" Guy, Judge Constance Harm, Artie Ziff and Agnes Skinner.
A few of the endings are either rushed or confusing, like the ending to "Lisa Goes Gaga".
Just like South Park, there are some episodes that attack and make jabs at SJW propaganda like before, which isn't a bad concept most of the time. However, unlike South Park, The Simpsons doesn't do a good job of it most of the time. There are some good jabs at SJW propaganda here and there, but most of the time, it's not executed well. However, one episode ("Bart vs. Itchy and Scratchy") hypocritically panders to the SJW crowd for the worst reasons imaginable, giving the series a bad reputation at it.
Some of the songs are cringe-worthy or hard to listen for some people because of how bad they are or are used so poorly, like the song "Making a Food Blog" from "The Food Wife".
The voice acting, while still good, can get annoying from some of the characters sometimes, especially Marge and Ned Flanders.
- Since 2015, Julie Kavner (Marge's voice actress) has started sounding tired and worn-out, possibly due to Kavner aging.
Some of the jokes try way too hard to be "hip" and "cool", but it only backfires and makes some of the post-movie era episodes seem outdated. A few great examples of this are when an episode literally stopped everything to have the entire family sing "Baby Shark", having an entire episode dedicated to Pokémon Go released a year after the game was relevant, and the episode "Flanders' Ladder" opening with Bart tricking Lisa into playing the Scary Maze Game and saying "epic sister fail!" afterwards. Keep in mind that the episode aired in mid-2018.
In 2019, they did this video called "West Wing Story", which was a very bad attempt at mocking Donald Trump and is obviously another attempt to stay relevant, even though the show was already relevant.
Some of the episodes have plot holes and continuity errors that retcon previous seasons such as, for example, “That '90s Show”, where it’s revealed that Homer and Marge were young back in the 1990s, were dating and didn't have kids back then, despite the fact that they were young and were dating in the 1970s, got married in the '80s, and Bart and Lisa were born in the '80s, as well as the fact that this show came out before the '90s even began. All in an attempt to justify why they didn’t age in the current seasons as an example.
"Treehouse of Horror XXII" is the weakest of the Treehouse of Horror episodes. Though there are some good and bad jokes, it's one of the more mediocre three-segment episodes of the series due to the first segment relying solely on toilet humor (for context, Homer was paralyzed and could only communicate by farting) and the third segment relying on dated pop-culture references to movies like Avatar (the episode was released two years after the movie stopped being relevant).
The series is no longer dubbed in Japanese since Season 15. The movie was lucky to be dubbed, but the rest of the series - both pre-movie and post movie - are left broadcasting with the original English version with Japanese subtitles added whenever the characters are speaking. Even when they aren't, the subtitles are added in anyway, which is a real shame because The Simpsons was broadcast in Japan since the '90s.
Most of the Latin Spanish dubbing cast went on strike after Season 14 and were replaced (with the exception of Bart, whose voice actress, Marina Huerta, returned after leaving in 1999 due to salary disputes; she was also cast as Marge, along with Jorge Ornelas as Moe, Gonzalo Curiel as Kent Brockman until his 2020 death, and Carl). The replacement voice actors have not managed to live up to the original cast, mainly due to the local jokes, expression,s and words being eliminated.
Starting in the second half of Season 20, the series received a new intro due to the switch to HD. While decent, it really isn't as good as the intros from Season 1 and Seasons 2-20a because of the animation (for example, rather than Marge looking concerned before giving a sigh of relief upon seeing Maggie in the shopping bag, the new intro simply has her turn her head without much emotion) and cramming in too many gags (such as Homer being sent flying through the door by Marge's car rather than him running away from it). Some sequences (such as the aforementioned shopping scene) were animated using Adobe Flash, explaining the stiff and lifeless animation.
In 2020, the crew decided to not have white voice actors voice non-white characters, which was done mainly because of the protests of George Floyd. This comes off as pandering to SJWs.
- While most of the new voice actors do a fine job with their work, Alex Désert, the new voice actor of Carl, sounds like he's trying way too hard to imitate Hank Azaria.
The loss of composer Alf Clausen in 2017 and his replacement with Bleeding Fingers Music robbed the music of its beautiful character.

Good Qualities

The soundtrack was still great until composer Alf Clausen was fired in 2017.

Like every other cartoon, The Simpsons still mixes up its source material, such as by Flanders and Homer become bounty hunters in "Sex, Pies and Idiot Scrapes". Or Skinner and Chalmers go on a road trip in "The Road To Cincinnati".
There are still some funny gags, jokes and/or lines. Some of them include Ralph Wiggum's "Ralphisms" in various episodes, Homer's line "Stupid Sexy Flanders!" in Little Big Mom, Marge krumping in Little Orphan Millie, Moleman's line "No-one's gay for Moleman" in Future-Drama and Bart prank-calling Moe in various episodes.
Some of the characters are still memorable and likable, such as:

- Lenny Leonard and Carl Carlson
- Groundskeeper Willie
- Superintendent Chalmers
- Mr. Burns
- Waylon Smithers
- Professor Frink
- Hans Moleman
- Maggie Simpson
- Ralph Wiggum
Seasons 11-20a have smoother animation. While it's more restricted in Season 20b onwards, the lighting, textures, coloring and character designs are nice to look at and are a step up from previous seasons.
The new HD intro from Season 20b onwards includes references to earlier seasons and a new billboard gag, along with some recurring gags such as Lisa's instrument (examples include the violin, trumpet, tuba, even vocalizing in one episode).
The show is still good at making songs of their own like "Everybody Hates Ned Flanders" from "Dude, Where's My Ranch?" and "They'll Never Stop the Simpsons" from "Gump Roast".
Even if the pop-culture references and product placements tend to get overused in some cases, at least they are still fun to point out rather than getting jammed down people's throats.
The couch gags are still fun, creative and hilarious to watch, such as the Powers of Ten couch gag, the La-Z Rider couch gag, as well as the crossover couch gag with Rick and Morty. Some couch gags are even made by guest animators such as Banksy, Bill Plympton and Don Hertzfeldt.
The main voice cast has not changed, and the acting is mostly good.
The writing is still decent, depending on the episode.
It still pays tribute to deceased cast members, crew members and past guest stars.
Season 32 is somewhat of an improvement with the animation update, the writing becoming slightly more clever and more well received episodes (one episode was even written by David X. Cohen, who had last written an episode in 1998, and Nell Scovell, who wrote "One Fish, Two fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish" in 1990 and was the creator of the late 90's "Sabrina The Teenage Witch"). Also helping is that Matt Selman (A series regular from 1997) became part-time executive producer along with Al Jean. However, it still isn't as good as the first ten seasons.

Reception

While the first ten season were positively received, Season 11-present has received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike. It is rather diverse on when The Simpsons went downhill, some fans speculate that the show went downhill since Season 9 because of the infamous episode "The Principal and the Pauper", while other fans speculate that Season 9 & Season 10 are still apart of the "Golden Age" and that series actually went downhill after Season 11 (though rarely, some fans can get some enjoyment out of Season 11 and Season 12).

Voice actor Harry Shearer stated in interviews that he was well aware of the show's decline and admitted that he only stayed because of the paycheck.
Russi Taylor, voice actress of Martin, Terri, and Sherri died from colorectal cancer on July 26, 2019. Grey DeLisle Griffin stated that she will be the new voice actress of Martin, Terri, and Sherri starting by Season 31 after Russi died.
