Note: Any SpongeBob SquarePants episodes are forbidden due to clogging up the wiki in the past. No exceptions. Also, do not put the post-sequel era, Seasons 4-5, or the first half of Season 9 here, as the post-sequel era and Seasons 4-5 are decent, and the first half of Season 9 is where the show started to improve.

SpongeBob SquarePantsBTSW is an American animated television series created by the late marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. The series chronicles the adventures and endeavors of the title character and his various friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom. The series' popularity has made it a media franchise, as well as the highest-rated series to ever air on Nickelodeon, and the most distributed property of MTV Networks. As of 2015, the media franchise has generated $12 billion in merchandising revenue for Nickelodeon, and is currently one of the most well known cartoons to date. However, during Seasons 6 to 8 (2008-2012), the show experienced a massive dip in quality.

Bad Qualities

  1. The main problem with these seasons is that they lack the charm and cleverness of the first three seasons and to a lesser extent, the fourth season and even the fifth season.
    1. On that topic, almost all of the main characters are severely flanderizedLCW:
      • SpongeBobLCW himself has gone from a naive and eccentric yet optimistic and mature protagonist to an extremely annoying and obnoxious idiot who is either too darn happy all the time or is a crybaby.
      • PatrickLCW has gone from a simple-minded yet hilarious and charming starfish to a loathsome moron who's as dumb as a bag of rocks. He has also become a selfish jerk who would care less about anyone and that includes SpongeBob, who is supposed to be his best friend.
      • Mr. KrabsLCW has gone from being a greedy restaurant owner with a bit of a golden heart to an even greedier, malicious, and villainous restaurant owner with little regard for anyone including his employees SpongeBob and Squidward, up to the point where he is more evil than Plankton.
        • Likewise, his daughter, Pearl, has also been flanderized, going from an emotional yet likable teenage girl to an extremely whiny spoiled brat who always wants expensive things as well as an annoying crybaby similar to SpongeBob. Speaking of SpongeBob, Pearl does not get along with him very well in these seasons compared to the first five seasons.
      • Sandy has become a lot more obsessed with science in these seasons than she was in the first five seasons, up to the point where she's become a bland, one-dimensional and neurotic science geek with no interesting personality whatsoever. While she did have an interest in science in previous seasons, it wasn't her defining trait back then.
      • Squidward and Mrs. Puff have become bigger punching bagsLCW than they were in the previous seasons (more on that later), even if they're unlikable at the correct times.
    2. Besides that, the seasons contain awful writing that doesn’t stay true to the show (resulting in far more bad episodes than good), to the point that the episodes that once had their individual pages have been permanently deleted due to cluttering the wiki.
      • To make matters worse, during these seasons (especially in Seasons 6-7), Nickelodeon often demanded more new episodes and rushed the production of these episodes, hence why they were often either poorly executed like "Truth or Square" or bad from the start like "One Coarse Meal".
  2. After "Truth or Square", the series still remained in 4:3 until after the 4:3 produced Season 8 episodes and Season 7 in general. The only ones in those seasons that don't use the 4:3 ratio are "It's a SpongeBob Christmas" and "Truth or Square", which risks dating these seasons (after Season 6).
  3. The animation, while not terrible, is extremely dull and restricted in these seasons (although Seasons 7 and 8's animations are a little looser):
    • Season 6 arguably has the worst animation in the series as it has washed-out color palettes, unappealing character designs and too much closeup gross-out images.
    • Season 7's animation is dull, bland and almost feels it has the same washed-out color palettes as the previous seasons, as well as that sometimes the facial expressions feel overly detailed in some areas that are most likely unappealing.
    • Season 8's animation has occasional frame rate issues, mainly in the 4:3 produced episodes.
  4. While there are a handful of good jokes, the humor has become noticeably lackluster, which is a shame considering that the previous seasons and next seasons are well known for their very clever and hilarious humor.
  5. Some episodes are very mean-spirited, which mainly involve Squidward and Mrs. Puff (rarely even SpongeBob or Gary) getting tortured with either over-the-top punishments or being unfairly treated.
    • Even Plankton gets tortured terribly, most notably in episodes such as "One Coarse Meal" and "Plankton's Regular".
    • Many times in these seasons, the offender characters who torture innocent characters with either over-the-top punishments or unfair treatment towards them often come off as Karma Houdinis or Idiot Houdinis who get away scot-free, with SpongeBob, Patrick Star and Mr. Krabs being some of the worst offenders out there.
  6. Some episodes are incredibly stupid and have poorly-written plots (like "Face Freeze!", "Earworm", "Rodeo Daze" and "Yours, Mine and Mine").
    • Sometimes in these seasons, almost all characters aside from just SpongeBob or Patrick are often depicted as acting like idiots than they were in the first five seasons, which can get irritating.
  7. Some episodes can either have gross-out humor, disturbing and violent content, and don't stay true to the show, with "The Splinter", "A Pal For Gary" and "One Coarse Meal" being the worst offenders out there.
    • Another fact that in "To Love A Patty" from Season 5, there is a scene depicting on-screen deaths which shows SpongeBob in a very vile way, gruesomely murdering a bunch of scallops, even though SpongeBob and Patrick raised Junior in "Rock A Bye Bivalve" and the fact SpongeBob has a pet scallop named Shelley in a few episodes. At least there isn't any blood and gore.
  8. The TV movie "Truth or Square" was not well-received, mainly due to the blatant bait-and-switches and false advertising. It ended up being the last SpongeBob TV special until 2019.
  9. Some episodes try to be like an episode from the classic era or The Ren & Stimpy ShowBTSW, but some either get it wrong due to poor execution or failure to try being like these episodes from two good cartoons by ripping the ideas off from either Ren & Stimpy or the first three seasons. It’s like the writers didn't really try.
    • Besides that, they really have boring filler just to kill time, have no consistency or intelligence or morals that were tagged on to the point of practically nothing happening in the episodes. For example, "Stuck In the Wringer" teaches kids that "crying solves all your problems". It doesn't come off as a joke moral, instead, it comes off as an actual moral rather than something to laugh at.
    • Another example, in "Rodeo Daze", SpongeBob believes that Sandy is in danger because she is going to Texas for her rodeo, even though it's been established that he knows that Sandy is a squirrel from America and not a fish or any sea creature. He abducts everyone in their sleep with bubbles to help him (even Krabs and Squidward don't agree with him and secretly think his plan is stupid), but nobody believes him but Patrick. Of course, he then resorts to blowing bubbles to people's homes to rescue Sandy, even though Sandy is perfectly fine.
  10. The seasons have pretty bad morals, such as:
    • Bullying
    • Lying
    • Stealing
    • Framing people
    • Crying in order to solve your problems
    • Being irresponsible
    • Being immature
    • Being a jerk
    • Taking advantage of others
    • Breaking rules
    • Kidnapping
    • Not learning from your mistakes
  11. There was also a face SpongeBob makes in "Boating Buddies" where he looks at the camera when he breathes to Squidward the most horrifying way imaginable. On top of that, in "The Clash of Triton", there was another face that SpongeBob makes while talking to Triton through a cage. Not to mention, he also talks with a bad breath as well, which is both disgusting and disturbing at the same time.
  12. Some episodes reuse plots from episodes of the previous seasons or bear too many similarities from episodes of other shows, such as:
    • "Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy", "Gramma's Secret Recipe" and "Shellback Shenanigans" (all from Season 7) all reuse the same plot: that of "Imitation Krabs" from season 2.
    • "Krusty Dogs" feels too similar to "Bossy Boots" from season 2, except with a least decent plot and good bits here and there.
    • "The Play's the Thing" is a rip-off of "Culture Shock" from season 1.
    • "Model Sponge" feels too similar to "As Seen on TV" from season 3, except with no charm from "As Seen on TV"; instead, it's really boring.
    • "Grooming Gary" is a version of "The Great Snail Race" from season 3 without SpongeBob taking advantage of Gary himself, but at least Spongebob doesn’t force or demand Gary.
    • "The Krabby Kronicle" bears many similarities to "Truth or Ed", an episode from the Cartoon Network series Ed, Edd n EddyBTSW, that aired two years prior to Season 6 of SpongeBob.
    • "A Day Without Tears" is a version of "Funny Pants" from season 4, but it replaces laughing with crying.
    • "Rodeo Daze" is "Texas", except this episode takes out the charm from said season 1 episode, portrays SpongeBob as a complete moron throughout the episode, and it has a nonsensical story.
    • "Home Sweet Rubble" copycats on "Home Sweet Pineapple" from season 1, except that it has no charm, the overall story is a complete rehashed mess and that the animation in that episode, whilst it did improve, is kind of weak. Not even the rushed ending bothered to help.
    • "Toy Store of Doom" feels a bit similar to the RugratsBTSW episode "Toy Palace".
  13. Aside of "Truth or Square", there are other episodes that are false advertising to the point Nickelodeon has clearly wasted everyone's time when giving what was given to the fans, let alone disappointing every fan:
    • In "The Clash of Triton", Triton appears mainly in the second half due to the amount of filler in this episode, and he hardly gets focused on. Not to mention, the original title of the episode, "Neptune's Party" is not any better. Instead this title will make viewers think it's all about King Neptune's party, there is no focus to it making the episode feel unfocused.
    • "Bubble Buddy Returns" is nothing more than a disappointing sequel to the original "Bubble Buddy", which is about SpongeBob taking care of Shiny Bubble, which isn't a bad idea, but because the whole plot takes up almost the entire episode, Bubble Buddy does not appear much and appears, in the end, saving the last few minutes of this episode. Let alone such wasted potential and poor execution.
    • "Shuffleboarding" has a misleading title as this episode felt the writers changed the plot from having SpongeBob and Patrick covering for Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy to do some shuffleboarding, to arresting people for dumb reasons or for no reason whatsoever. In which, this episode should have not been called "Shuffleboarding" to begin with.
    • "Glove World R.I.P." only exists as an episode just to make you feel sad that Glove World is closing down, whilst it is reasonable Glove Universe is opening, they should have added something in the script that the park was in bad condition and most of the rides are giving the customers bad service. Not to mention, it's entire plot is a complete mess, and after Season 8, Glove World returns in Season 10's "Don't Wake Patrick" perfectly fine despite being closed for the night, making the episode not only pointless to the series, but also a huge waste of time.
  14. The voice acting, while just as great as in the previous seasons, can get annoying and obnoxious in these seasons due to some of the voice actors often talking very loudly.
    • SpongeBob's higher-pitched voice from the first movie to Season 7 is kind of annoying.
  15. Out of all three seasons, Season 7 is widely considered to be the worst of the bunch, as it not only recycled the plot of "Imitation Krabs" three times but also has some of the worst and most-hated episodes of the show.

Good Qualities

  1. There are still a handful of good/decent episodes, such as "Not Normal", "Overbooked", "Suction Cup Symphony", "Sweet and Sour Squid", "House Fancy" (despite the infamous toenail scene), "Karen 2.0", "Sand Castles in the Sand", "Perfect Chemistry", "Fiasco!", "I Heart Dancing", "Nautical Novice", "A Life in a Day", "Chum Bucket Supreme", "The Inside Job", "Frozen Face-Off", "Professor Squidward", "The Abrasive Side", "SpongeBob's Last Stand", "The Bad Guy Club for Villains", "Planet of the Jellyfish", "Chum Fricassee", "Love That Squid", "It’s a SpongeBob Christmas!", "Hello Bikini Bottom!", "Enchanted Tiki Dreams", "Single Cell Anniversary", "Squidward in Clarinet Land" (depending on your view) and the list goes on.
  2. Likewise, there are still some good jokes here and there, such as when the music lines remind Patrick of railroad tracks in "Professor Squidward".
  3. The lighting, background art, animation, and voice acting have improved a bit since Season 8, but have gotten even better since Season 9.
  4. Some of the episodes are nicely animated, like "Ghoul Fools", "Sand Castles in a Sand", "Face Freeze" and "A Life in a Day".
  5. "Truth or Square" is the first time SpongeBob went in widescreen (despite the show staying in 4:3 until Season 9).
  6. The title and time cards are still good much like the ones from the first five seasons.
  7. The songs and musical numbers are still fun to enjoy (such as "We've Got Scurvy!").
  8. Some of the bad episodes are so bad that they can make for unintentional comedy, such as "Big Sister Sam" and "Face Freeze".
  9. Anytime Mr. Krabs gets called out for his actions (ex. Patty Caper, The Krabby Kronicle, No Hat for Pat, The Cent of Money, The Wreck of the Moana Loa, Hello Bikini Bottom, etc.) , it is bound to be satisfactory.
  10. At least Plankton, Karen and Gary the Snail weren't flanderized and retain their old personas. Some of the side characters (such as Mermaid Man, Barnacle Boy, their enemies and Larry the Lobster) also remained with consistent characterizations.
  11. While Stephen Hillenburg's involvement in the series has been reduced compared to earlier and later seasons, to the point where he wasn't involved in several episodes, he did remain as the executive producer, reviewed all the episodes, and provided suggestions for the crew of the series.
  12. The show has redeemed itself since the ninth season and especially the post-sequel era.BTSW

Trivia

  • Despite the decline in quality, these seasons have spawned various internet memes, such as "Hi, how are ya?" from "Not Normal" and "Who put you on the planet? Ugh!" from "I ♥ Dancing".

To those wanting this page to be about seasons 6-8. Just stop, because this is how the seasons go. Season 5 was mediocre, Season 6 was bad, Season 7 was atrocious, and Season 8 was fine.

Not to mention Season 6 has the worst animation out of all seasons in SpongeBob SquarePants.

Welp, looks like Season 8 is finally added.
Now, all we need to do is remove Season 5, and we'll be complete.

I'm actually not a modern hater. I don't find Season 8 to be good or bad, but sort of mediocre.

I'd say it's a mixed bag.

The good episodes in it are better than the good episodes of Seasons 6-7, but when it's bad, it's borderline abysmal.

I can see these seasons were not very good. In my opinion, the Tom and Jerry Gene Deitch era and Thomas and Friend Seasons 12-16 are much worse than these seasons.

You know? If anything, I think the most underrated SpongeBob episode would have to be "Face Freeze". I think the hate for it isn't necessary, and yes the faces are hideous and gross, but in the same time they kind of make for unintentional comedy

I know this upcoming critque of mine is outdated but I just desire answers??? Exactly who coined the term "Squidward torture porn" and "torture porn" in general??? Comparing people suffering to BDSM porn is a outlandish action. It's illogical to describe a nonsexual instance as such because the "torture" of Squidward isn't erotic in the slightest nor does it aim to be. What doesn't improve it is that the term is literally used AGAINST A FUCKING KID'S SHOW!!! There are much better terms than that. They've once been a staple of SpongeBob related articles and I'm thankful they've been exterminated a long time ago.

If there is two episodes I would change, it would be Stuck in the Wringer and One Coarse Meal. Stuck in the Wringer has Patrick notice what the crowd of jerks say to Spongebob, feels guilty, apologizes to Spongebob, and says this to the crowd.

"You can't talk to Spongebob that way! He's my friend! I should have never had done what I did. You guys are big meany heads!"

After he miraculously gets his friend out of the wringer, they walk away, and leave the crowd of people look like jerks.

One Coarse Meal has Spongebob confront Mr. Krabs after seeing Plankton try to kill himself, calling him the worst boss in the world. Krabs is disgusted by what he has become and decides this rivalry has gone too far. After he apologizes to Plankton, they are best friends again.

If it were up to me, One Coarse Meal wouldn't exist at all. Also, I thought the joke moral at the end of Stuck in the Wringer was funny. It's obviously a joke and not meant to be taken seriously. And this is coming from someone who is very literal-minded.

@NeptunePerson2018 You don't seem literal to me. But then again I choose not to believe impressions without analysis. And of course I'm the opposite of literal.

Is it just me, or am I the only one who thinks Tom Kenny's performance as SpongeBob in these seasons to the present-day episodes lacks the charm the original performance in the seasons 2-3 and the original film had?

(NOTE: I did not include the first season, as I think SpongeBob's performance in seasons 2-3 and the original film is an improvement over the one in the first season.)

Watch clips of Seasons 6-8 SpongeBob speaking, then compare it to Seasons 2-3 and first film SpongeBob. If you pay attention, you'll see why.
