Rete 4 aired Yu-Gi-Oh! GX during Quarto Grado
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX is a Japanese anime spin-off and sequel of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters based on the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise while Quarto Grado is an Italian talk show TV program, both broadcast on Rete 4.
On September 21, 2020, one of the most sensational and bloody murders committed with a knife in recent years took place in Lecce: the victims were 33-year-old man Daniele De Santis, known for being a football referee with a thousand activities and his partner Eleonora Manta, a 30-year-old woman who had just got a job at INPS as a clerk. At first, there were rumors of an organized killer dressed in black, with a balaclava, gloves and a yellow backpack, after a short time the investigators brought to justice the 21-year-old Antonio De Marco, an inexperienced student of nursing who not only made himself filming in an effort to map cameras in the area, but he also committed a flood of other missteps, including leaving his fingerprints and DNA at the scene of the double murder.
On October 2, 2020, the Italian talk show program tried to motivate the fact of blood in the most disparate ways, even discussing an alleged homosexuality of the young man to demonstrate with pindaric flights Antonio's obsession with Daniele, while the whole internet focused more on the "incel motive" which has not yet been proven to date.
Among other things, from the journalistic story an avalanche of memes was born, promoted in particular on Twitter and YouTube by some people, as the editorial staff of the aforementioned Mediaset program led by Gianluigi Nuzzi had the idea of airing the theme song for a certain cartoon, which apparently liked at those times, according to some unspecified testimonies, to De Marco.
However, the incident began when the male announcer mentions "L'introverso Antonio, la mattina del suo arresto, cantava una canzone, questa..." ("The introverted Antonio, on the morning of his arrest, was singing a song, this one…"), and within seconds later, the scene transitions to the footage from the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime series, with an Italian theme song by Giorgio Vanni. This was just lazily-made as a footage from the Japanese anime is ironic on the part of an Italian talk show due to their overzealous copyright policies. YouTube user Jetix Chick mocked this incident and called out for their action with a video where Jaden Yuki (the main protagonist of GX) reacts to it through his laptop (see below).
Il motivo principale per cui non stavamo guardando Yu-Gi-Oh! quel giorno (The overall reason why we weren't watching Yu-Gi-Oh! that day)
- To get the elephant out of the room, the footage from GX discourages the Lecce murder and makes this a joke.
- What's worse about the discouragement, Jaden accidentally made a brief appearance throughout the matter.
L'UNICA qualità redentrice (The ONLY redeeming quality)
The Italian GX theme, performed by Giorgio Vanni, is so catchy to listen to, even for TCG fans.
