Popeye the SailorBTSW is an animated series based on the comic strip with the same name. While the Fleischer Studios cartoons as well as some of the early Famous Studios cartoons from the 1940's were well received by critics and animation fans alike, the same can’t be said about Famous Studios' later Popeye cartoons from 1949 to 1957.

Why They Suck

  1. These cartoons lack the charm and creativity that most of the earlier cartoons had.
  2. There are not that many action sequences in these cartoons unlike the previous ones.
  3. Some of the cartoons during this era don’t stay that true to the original source material.
  4. Most of the designs started to become even more mediocre and don’t bare that much of a resemblance to the original Segar designs.
  5. Some of the characters were heavily Flanderized during this era;
    • Popeye went from a tough protagonist who always saves Olive from Bluto and other antagonists into a huge butt monkey who is constantly abused by everyone around him.
    • Olive has changed from a fickle yet kind hearted girlfriend of Popeye into a idiotic hypocritical and angry jerk who usually treats Popeye poorly.
    • Bluto went from being Popeye's arch enemy who wants to have Olive for himself into a much bigger pervert as well as a sadistic brute.
  6. The animation started to take a nosedive in quality around the mid to late 50's.
  7. Some of the cartoons during this era are also clip show episodes such as The Crystal Brawl, Popeye's 20th Anniversary, and Assault and Flattery.
    • Some of the cartoons also reuse footage from Fleischer Studios' earlier cartoons and have the voice actors redub over the footage of those cartoons such as Popeye Makes a Movie reuses footage from Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves and Big Bad Sindbad reuses footage from Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor.
  8. A majority of the cartoons from this era are color remakes of far better and funnier earlier Popeye cartoons like The Fly's Last Flight being a color remake of Flies Ain’t Human, Popeye's Pappy being a color remake of Goonland, Baby Wants Spinach being a color remake of With Little Swee'Pea, Riot in Rhythm being a color remake of Me Musical Nephews, and so fourth.
  9. This era celebrated Popeye's anniversary way too late with the cartoon Popeye's 20th Anniversary which was released in 1954 rather than 1953 when Popeye was adapted into animation in 1933.
  10. While the voice acting can be good at times, it can get on your nerves once in a while, such as Olive's voice and Popeye's nephews' voices.
  11. Very slow pacing and timing for the cartoons.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Some characters from the original Fleischer cartoons returned during this era such as Pappy, Wimpy, and Little Swee'Pea.
  2. Some good/decent cartoons like Popeye the Ace of Space, Pilgrim Popeye, Lunch with a Punch, and Baby Wants a Battle.
  3. The animation from the earlier cartoons during this era is passable.
  4. Decent voice acting and music.

How I would compare the Popeye eras to Ren and Stimpy's decline;

1933-1942 (Fleischer Studios era): Spumco era

1942-1948 (Early Famous Studios era): Games Animation era

1949-1957 (Later Famous Studios era): Adult Party Cartoon era

Speaking of Ren and Stimpy's decline, I know is impossible to add the Games Animation era here, for obviously for being well received in this recent years, but in reality it wasn't well received when it was announced in 1992, which former viewers of the show protested again this era, because of John Kricfalusi's firing by Nickelodeon, for reasons we already know, I found this information in articles about this whole situation in old magazines I found on internet, and also the Games Animation seasons are inferior to the Spümcø seasons, like Trevor said on Awful Movies, but, I know, know, we can't add the Seasons 3-5 of Ren and Stimpy (Games Animation) here

Plus, at least the Games era is not as bad as Adult Party Cartoon.

Exactly, but despite the Games Animation era had two bad episodes It's a Dog Life and Aloha Höek, at least didn't have much terrible and not well received episodes like what happened with Adult Party Cartoon years later
